Hackney Brewery — Identity

The Client

Hackney Brewery was established by Jon Swain and Peter Hills to bring top quality, locally produced beer to the thirsty drinkers of East London. Established in 2011 they were the first brewing company to register in Hackney this century.

The Project

They required a brand identity & packaging for current and future ranges.

The Approach

Despite only establishing themselves in 2011, the name suggests a far longer historical heritage that we wanted to visually trade on.

Creative Execution

A lot of research was conducted into traditional sign writing and the ghost signs that can be found on the sides of Victorian buildings in and around Hackney, taking that as a graphic and typographic starting point. The identity needed to be eye-catching in a dimly lit bar environment and arouse customer curiosity and interest. The colour palette was inspired by ‘traditional weathered enamel paint’ to help clearly differentiate the range of ales they offer.
